Starship, Burning Man, Proud Boys

Welcome to the Thursday Newsletter, where we supercharge your news, saving you hours of scrolling so you have more time to lead your team.

Good morning. Regarded by many Americans as the best day of the year, today marks the first day of the NFL season. As fans celebrate the Chiefs hosting the Lions for the inaugural game of the 104th NFL season, girlfriends and wives wonder why date night just got cheaper.

The truth is sports betting has seen astronomic leaps in recent years. Year-on-year revenue growth for the sports betting market has seen 75% increases and 19% of Americans admit to betting on a sport in the last year. With more cash being spent on sports betting, ladies could see an uptick in trips to Applebeeā€™s for date night.

SpaceX Starship Ready for Round Two

Screenshot from Elon Muskā€™s X Account

After a failed orbital launch in April that lead to an explosion so powerful it sprayed soil and sand on a town over 5 miles away, SpaceX is ready for a second attempt at launching the Starship pending FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) license approval, announced CEO Elon Musk on X.

šŸš€The Mission. The 400 foot tall Starship rocket has high hopes in being the first launch system that sends humans and cargo to Mars to develop a settlement there. The rocket is designed to be the most powerful rocket ever, having made over 1,000 adjustments since the first launch attempt.

Starship is also designed to be re-usable, which seems like an impossible task until you wonder how the heck your getting off of Mars.

Ahead of the FAAā€™s pending approval, here are a few modifications that should fix the issues that lead to the first attemptā€™s failure:

  • A vent and heat shield have been placed between the rocket and the booster which will help the rocket push away from its super heavy booster.

  • It's also added a water deluge system to the launchpad, which essentially floods the area with water to keep it from heating up too much.

  • The launchpad has been reinforced so it can withstand Starshipā€™s ultimate power.

Hurricane Idaliaā€™s Aftermath

REUTERS/Julio Cesar Chavez/File Photo

Though experts believe hurricane Idalia would have inflicted more damage had it not weakened once it hit Floridaā€™s Gulf Coast and turned toward Georgia, private market insured losses still expect to cover between $3 billion and $5 billion. The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) expects $500 million in losses.

šŸ“Context. Private market insurance refers to insurance plans marketed by the private insurance industry, as opposed to government-run insurance programs like NFIP.

Floridian Governor Ron DeSanis visited Levy County, FL, on Sunday to discuss relief efforts, announcing that 39,000 people are still without power and crews are working around the clock to turn the lights back on.

ā›ˆDeveloping Hurricane Lee: brace for impact.

A tropical depression quickly strengthens as itā€™s heading toward the Caribbean and is expected to develop into ā€œa powerful hurricaneā€ reports the National Hurricane Center (NHC). Some forecast models have it going through the Caribbean and potentially Florida if it doesnā€™t shift north soon. The NHCā€™s long-range forecast said winds could reach 140 mph.

Burning Man turns to Soggy Man

Burning Man, the music festival famous for giving raving music lovers a week-long concert in the Nevada desert, turned into a soggy nightmare this week.

Black Rock Desert, Nevada, accumulated a months worth of rain in just 2 days, turning sand to mud and leaving 73,000 Burners stranded for days. The festival hosts tens of thousands of people every year along with A-list celebrities and influencers at a ticket price of $575. Festival volunteer, Evi Airy told Reuters, "It really looked apocalyptic. When you see the people walking barefoot in such a cold with the children. Some people have a small child here like three years old, four years old. I don't know how they survived."

Casualties at Burning Man.

There was one casualty at the event. Leon Reese, 32, was reported dead by officials on Sunday. A medical examiner said the cause of death is pending investigation, but drug intoxication is suspected. The vast amount of mud is said to have delayed the relief to Leon and other Burners.

šŸš¦Muddy Relief.

Festival goers were given the green light on Monday to leave the muddy mess. Many vehicles became stuck on the way out of the gate, defying the ā€œleave no traceā€ mantra that Burning Man lives by. Just a mere 5-mile road took 5 Ā½ hours of travel time per vehicle as 10,000 festival goers left on Monday.

CAPITOL HILL

The Proud Boys or The Sad Boys

Proud Boys ring leader, Enrique Tarrio, was sentenced to 22 years in prison on counts of seditious conspiracy in a failed plot to overturn the transfer of power from Former President Donald Trump to President Joe Biden through the Capital Riots on January 6th, 2021.

This marks the highest sentencing for Capitol Riot contributors, while other Proud Boys, Joseph R. Biggs & Zachary Rehl, were given 17 years & 15 years with 36 months of supervised released each.

Although Tarrio was not present at the riots, he made his intentions clear by creating a new Proud Boy group for the Capitol breach called ā€œThe Ministry of Self-Defenseā€, along with a number of social media posts condoning the breach into Capitol buildings.

  • ā€œProud of my boys and my country, donā€™t f***ing leave.ā€

  • ā€œIā€™m with you, weā€™re all with you, you make this country great. Never stop fighting.ā€ Tarrio posted weeks after January 6th, 2021.

Big Picture. Of the 1,100 people brought to court over the Capitol Riots, prosecutors have convicted over 600 while setting an example that the U.S. Capitol is not to be messed with.

SPORTS

NFLā€™s Return, US Open, & Cableā€™s ESPN Debacle

  • šŸˆNFL. The NFL returns today, American online video-sharing platform YouTube is partnering with the NFL to stream out-of-market games as a part of its growing YouTube TV bundle. YouTube acquired the rights to NFL Sunday Ticket in a $2 billion dollar deal beating out Apple and Amazon as the intends to expand consumerā€™s access to Sunday Ticket through the subscription-video-on-demand model, while also giving creators the ability to work with NFL game and behind-the-scenes content to make short-form format content for YouTube Shorts.

  • šŸŽ¾Tennis. US Open is currently in its second week with the Womenā€™s final happening on Saturday and the Menā€™s final match happening on Sunday afternoon. Each year the US Open is an economic boom for Queens, NY. Around 800,000 visitors flock to NYC generating more than $750 million in direct economic impact making the US Open one of the biggest sporting events in the world.

  • šŸ“ŗESPN Debacle. As Americans were getting ready for the return of college football and Labor Day Weekend, ESPN and Spectrum left 15 million Americans out of luck with hopes of watching their favorite college football team or the first weekend of the US Open. The impasse between ESPN and charter arrives at a pivotal moment in television as the decline in viewership for linear television coincides with the emergence of streaming. To get a sense of the reduction, over the last 5 years, the linear TV industry has lost approximately 25 million viewers which is about 25 percent of viewership. While disputes between cable companies and content providers are not new, it is fair to question if consumers current state of frustration and confusion paired with prevalence of streaming will lead to Americans moving on from cable at a higher percentage in the future.
