đŸ›č Marty McFly Would Be Proud

LK-99, $170k Per Year, Hoops & Politics

Good morning. “Live. Laugh. Love.” says your Instagram bio until today. Today is National Update-Your Bio-Day! It’s a chance to reflect on your accomplishments, experiences, and skills you’ve gained since last updating your bio in 2013. We aren’t saying it should be your significant other’s name with a heart next to it, but let the world know who you are.

Maybe this energy will encourage us to update our rĂ©sumĂ©s too. It’s recommended to update your rĂ©sumĂ© at the end of each quarter. “Do as I say, not as I do,” as Mama says. đŸ’â€â™€ïž

JOB ALERT

UPS To Pay $170k Annually to Drivers

Do you like to pick things up and put them down? Oh do we have the job for you. The world’s premier package-delivery company, UPS, has reached a deal with their Union, Teamster, on a 5-year, $30 billion contract. Those are Saudi Arabia poaching fĂștboler numbers.

The Union was pending strike when UPS agreed to boost starting wages for part-time workers to $21 an hour and improve working conditions, including adding air conditioning in new vehicles. Full-time drivers will make around $170,000 in annual pay and benefits by the end of the 5 year contract.

Think you’re cut out for the job? Join the line. Bloomberg reports that Indeed Inc. saw a 50% increase in job searches with “UPS” or “United Parcel Service” in the job title. “UPS driver jobs near me” has also been a top trending search on Google.

🚹Disclaimer

UPS’ policy is that an employer has to work “inside the building” first as a package loader. Even though these workers see the same benefits as a driver, they are usually only part-time and work less hours. Working your way up to the driver’s seat could take several years.

And as pandemic volumes drop, UPS may not be hiring much
until the holidays at least, where they hire 100,000 temporary workers.

đŸ™…â€â™‚ïžâ€œThis ain’t it.” - UPS Shareholders

UPS decreased its full-year profit forecast due to the increased costs of the labor agreement. UPS said the change was “primarily to reflect the volume impact from labor negotiations and the costs associated with the tentative agreement.”

Orlando Magic Donate $50k to Ron Desantis As NBPA Expresses Distaste

Phelan M. Ebenhack/Associated Press

The Orlando Magic told us they’re tone deaf without telling us they’re tone deaf on Thursday when financial disclosures made public that the NBA Team donated $50,000 to super PAC supportive of Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida.

For the first time publicly, an NBA Team made financial donations to a group allied with a presidential candidate and the NBA Players Association (NBPA) wasn’t having it. “A political contribution from the Orlando Magic is alarming given recent comments and policies of its beneficiary, “ the NBPA claimed in a statement. Also stating NBA personnel have the right to express their political views, just not on behalf of the entire organization.

DeSantis Fires Back

DeSantis fired back in a quote tweet at the NBPA, "It appears the NBA took a break from protesting our anthem and bending the knee to Communist China to chirp about my policies.”

📝Policies In Question

DeSantis enacted an overhaul of the African American History standards for the state of Florida over the last 3 years. Requiring teachers to ignore certain lessons & textbooks in penalty of losing their jobs. The law mandates:

  • Students may not be made to “feel guilt, anguish, or other forms of psychological distress”. In reference to stories of slave owners of the same race as the students.

  • Students must learn that enslaved people “developed skills” that “could be applied for their personal benefit”.

According to Pew Research Center, Black Americans are projected to account for 13.6% of all eligible voters in the United States in November.

LK-99: The Key to Futuristic Tech
 pending proof of existence

The envy we had for Marty McFly’s hoverboard might be eased pending proof of a newly created superconductor, LK-99, as scientists spend the last week trying to make metal levitate. A feat that would’ve gotten you a one-way ticket to burn at the stake in the The Middle Ages, is now a Nobel Prize worthy accomplishment.

Superconductors are characterized by a special material that can conduct electricity without any resistance, eliminating magnetic fields. This is especially useful to reduce the amount of energy lost when a magnet moves through circuits.

Before these findings, superconductors required extremely high temperatures and high pressure to work, eliminating real-world feasibility. But researchers have shared videos on social media of metal floating over magnets at room temperature and normal pressure as proof of their accomplishment.

💡Why the sudden hype?

In recent days, Muggles like us have gotten excited about 2 papers written by Scientists in South Korea that serve as the blue print for creating a new superconductor called LK-99 that works at room temperature and ambient pressure.

Not only is this a major breakthrough, but, “it’s easy to achieve in just 34 hours with simple equipment” said Princeton Graduate Alex Kaplan on X, helping propel the news to the mainstream.

⚠Not so fast.

Other scientists urge caution, reminding everyone that the South Korean papers haven’t been peer reviewed, results haven’t been replicated, and there could be other explanations for the floatation behavior described in the work.

DESIGN

What’s Causing All of These Logos to Look the Same?

This phenomenon in the world of logos where companies are rebranding from colorfully recognizable logos to black and white ones is causing a stir. The rule of thumb for brand logos is to be instantly recognizable while reflecting the values of the company. So why the sudden change?

As consumers, we appreciate the sensory enticing logos of Coca-Cola, McDonalds, and Starbucks. They evoke a feeling of excitement and nostalgia when we see TV advertisements, take a random exit off the interstate, or watch Spielberg’s E.T.

💡Why are brands reinventing the wheel?

Restaurants and other brands strategically use a combination of color and shapes to kick-start our biological instincts of nostalgia, curiosity, or hunger to lure our business. That’s been the formula since the early 1900s as Olympic flag designer Pierre de Coubertin pushed brand recognition past the commercial market, and digital companies have followed suit.

  • But digital companies face a different battle as we migrate our attention to tablets and phones instead of road signs and TV commercials. When we open our devices, we’re greeted with an overwhelming amount of imagery and color. The monochromatic logos are being used to declutter devices and websites to give attention to the content you’re there for.

  • Precognition is the instinct of knowing of an event before it happens. We’ve primitively developed this ability by identifying locations for food gathering and hunting. In the digital age, we use precognition every day when we open our devices and click on social media without thinking twice where it is on the screen. Seriously, try opening TikTok with your eyes closed. The need for colorful logos doesn’t translate as much for phone applications.

  • Think of your phone as a tool box. Your Weather App, Calculator, Social Media, Ride Sharing, and Music Streaming Services all have a home and you could probably route yourself to the app by memory. Digital companies are keeping your cognition in mind by decluttering your space.
