šThe Problem w/ A.I. Girlfriends
Welcome to WorkLife Wednesday, where we take a look into best-practice leadership methods to make your WorkLife awesome.
Good morning. Humanityās relationship with A.I. is quicky evolving in many ways. From AI-enabled robotic arms in manufacturing, to AI fraud detection software in finance, to self-driving vehicles for more efficient transportation, weāre on a journey to living integrated with artificial intelligence.
But what if I told you our lives with A.I. are about to get much more integrated? Likeā¦ romantically?
In recent months, A.I. girlfriends have taken companionship to the next (virtual) level, and not everyone is pleased about it.
In todayās email:
A.I. Girlfriends. Happy bot, happy life?
Sex Workersā Take on A.I. The problem with marketing A.I. girlfriends.

MY OBSERVATION IS
A.I. GIRLFRIENDāS ARE WEIRDā¦ BUUUT HEAR THEM OUT
Whoās a bigger loser in relationships: the guy who lies about having a girlfriend, or the guy who pays $10 per month for a virtual girlfriend?
We went from men lying about having a girlfriend, to those same men developing an A.I. girlfriend that is interested in all the things he isā¦ for the low cost of $10 per month. The only difference is she actually does go to another school.
A slew of A.I. girlfriend apps have taken the internet by storm as lonely men and women flock to easy companionship. Many report that virtual companionship provides them with:
Emotional support
Comfort
Validation
Ability to cope with emotions like loneliness, boredom, anxiety, or depression
Convenient
Free from emotional complexities
A way to avoid the fear of rejection
Thanks to these benefits, men and women are taking the untraditional route of paying for virtual companionship. But how long until itās considered traditional?
A SEXWORKERSā SAY IN THE MATTER
As more A.I. Girlfriend apps hit the app store, so do their advertisements on social media apps like Meta and Instagram causing a stir among sex workers.
Ads on Meta for A.I. girlfriends shows AI-generated imagery of realistic, partially clothed and stereotypically pornographic women while making stereotypical promises about role play conversations.
Some human sex workers raised concerns over Meta and Instagram favoring the AI-powered sex services by allowing them to be present while barring human sex work on Facebook and Instagram as āadult content.ā
āAs a sex worker, if I put anything like āI will do anything for you, I will make you come in a minuteā I would be deleted in an instant,ā Gemma Rose, director of a UK-based sex-worker rights organization, told Wired.
Over 29,000 ads for explicit AI āgirlfriendsā have been published across Metaās social media platforms despite the companyās advertising policies prohibiting ādepictions of people in explicit or suggestive positions, or activities that are overly suggestive or sexually provocative.ā
While we do have an obligation to look out for our own human race, the rise of A.I. in the world of companionship isnāt going anywhere, causing a debate for further regulation.
Is it fair to human sex workers that A.I. chat bots who are capable of having the same conversations with customers can market their service on social media? Should Meta allow human sex workers to advertise on the site, or ban both across the board?
